About the Foundation Fighting Blindness
The Foundation Fighting Blindness is the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing research for treatments and cures for blinding retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, Usher syndrome, and more. Since its founding in 1971, the Foundation has raised nearly $1 billion and become a global force in funding innovative research in genetics, gene therapy, stem cells, and emerging treatments for inherited retinal diseases.
With more than 50 years of impact, the Foundation supports over 100 research grants annually across a global network of scientists, institutions, and clinical partners. Through its groundbreaking research initiatives, collaborative clinical consortium, and community programs like VisionWalk, the Foundation empowers patients, drives scientific breakthroughs, and brings hope to the millions affected by vision loss worldwide.
About VisionWalk
VisionWalk is the Foundation Fighting Blindness’ premier fundraising event, bringing communities together nationwide to support those affected by blinding retinal diseases. Since 2006, more than 235,000 walkers and donors have raised over $71 million through VisionWalk 5Ks held in cities across the country — including right here in Denver!
This free, family-friendly event is more than just a walk, it’s a celebration of community, hope, and progress. Enjoy live music from Colorado Retina’s own Dr. Hagedorn and Dr. Hovland, along with talented CRA staff musicians. You'll also find breakfast, coffee, snacks, and booths featuring some of Colorado’s top resources for blind and low vision services. The 5K route (3.1 miles) loops around scenic Ferril Lake in City Park. All are welcome, including well-behaved, leashed dogs, but please be mindful of service animals working alongside blind participants. Invite your friends and family and help us make an impact on October 11, 2025!
Why We Walk
At Colorado Retina, we stand beside our patients every day in the fight against inherited retinal diseases (IRD), conditions that lead to progressive vision loss and blindness. As specialists in treating IRDs, we witness firsthand the courage of those living with these conditions, and we’re committed to being part of the solution.
Why Donate
As promising treatments move into critical human studies, the need for research funding is greater than ever. Through gifts like yours, the Foundation has become a champion for the 1 in 53 individuals affected around the world by blinding retinal diseases.
With the support of generous friends like you, their organization has been able to help:
- Identify 270+ retinal disease-causing genes
- Fund more than 104 research grants annually
- Support 133 investigators at 92 research institutions globally
Every dollar raised gets us that much closer to discovering treatments and cures for retinal degenerations!
